In 19th-century Montenegro, the free mountainous regions are surrounded by Ottoman forces, isolated from the West, and filled with conservatism, patriarchal customs, and superstition. Morlak, a poet and bishop inspired by the historical figure Peter II Petrović Njegoš, leads his tribe in the resistance against the invaders. Gravely ill, he is sent to southern Italy in search of a cure, where he arrives at a house in Naples – a place very different from the remote hills of his homeland. As Morlak contemplates life and death, his loyal servant Djuko deals with deep nostalgia and fear of losing his master in a foreign land.

Father Mother Sister Brother is a feature film, structured as a triptych, which follows three distant family relationships in three different countries. Each chapter is set in the present: “Father” takes place in the northeastern US, “Mother” in Dublin, while “Sister Brother” is set in Paris. The film is a series of character studies – quiet, observant and non-judgmental – a comedy interwoven with threads of melancholy.
