Documentary
Austria, Georgia, Serbia, 2020, 81’
Directors: Tatia Skhirtladze, Anna Khazaradze

During the Cold War, four legendary female chess players from Georgia revolutionized women’s chess worldwide, becoming true stars and icons of female emancipation. The film reveals their intertwined biographies and offers a rare insight into the present-day lives of Soviet chess icons Nona Gaprindashvili, Nana Alexandria, Maia Chiburdanidze, and Nana Ioseliani. It is a chronicle of their legacy and influence—a story about the spirit of an era, and about the inner lives of women who were at once world champions, athletes, wives, and mothers. At the same time, it is a story of touching friendships, rivalries, and self-awareness at a moment in history when such themes were less often spoken about and more often lived. Audiences in the region will also be pleased to see the appearance of Yugoslav chess player and journalist Milunka Lazarević, who offers her perspective on this fascinating period.
