„If a cat has kittens at a riding school, it doesn’t make them Lipizzaners“, reads a comment published in an Austrian daily newspaper—referring to director Olga Kosanović and the case that inspired her to make this film. Olga was born in Austria and has lived there her entire life. She only left the country for holidays and, like many young Europeans, to study abroad. However, when she applied for Austrian citizenship, she was told that she had spent two months too many outside the country. Out of this experience – and the feeling of not belonging to the country she had always considered home – Olga Kosanović creates a humorous and engaging documentary about her struggle with bureaucracy, but also about fundamental questions of belonging and identity. Alongside her own story, the film brings in many others willing to share their experiences and reflect on the timeless question: who are we?
