In 1858, in the Jewish quarter of Bologna, papal soldiers raided the home of the Mortara family. On the orders of the cardinal, they take away a seven-year-old boy who was secretly baptized. The Mortara family is ready to do anything to get their son back. Supported by public opinion and the international Jewish community, their struggle soon acquired a political character. In an effort to consolidate the increasingly weak power, the church and the pope do not agree to return the child.

Hundreds of frozen and starving people are floating on ships in the middle of the Mediterranean, fleeing the war. Scenes we’ve been seeing on the news lately – but the year is 1944 and refugees are fleeing Europe to Africa. After the capitulation of Italy, and before the arrival of the German army, Tito, with the help of the Allies, decided to evacuate 28,000 inhabitants of Dalmatia to Egypt, where they lived for two years under tents in the middle of the desert, in a kind of communist model-settlement that was supposed to show the West what the new Yugoslavia when the war ends. This is a story about them.
