Lea Vidaković | Matija Debeljuh

4 – 30.5.2019.

Otvaranje: subota, 4.maj u 19 sati

May 4 – 30, 2019

Opening: Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m.

The joint exhibition of the author whose works belong to the medium of puppet animation and the author whose works are closest to the field of experimental film is held on the proposal of the Gallery Council. It is another in a series of curatorial approaches, where artists who have not known each other connect and a possibility for cooperation in the future is recognized.

Through re-examining and creating temporal and spatial relationships, they both actually provide a possible visualization of the narrative during the process of creating works of art. How to extend the referential spaces of film, video and animation not only in the process of work, but also in the presentation?

Lea Vidaković puts emphasis on human characters, their relationships and emotional states, giving a very important role to space when it comes to narrative. The inner space of the animation develops together with the gallery space, in which the puppets are, and that in the minds of the viewers, in which individual interpretations of the images occur.

The animated triptych Sisters invokes the atmosphere of old Flemish paintings, where sisters, seized by melancholy, are facing the emptiness and sadness over the missing one. The miniature of an abandoned room into which only the exhibition visitors can peep, since the sisters always stop in front of it and never enter it, becomes the key to reading all three films. Anatomy of a Hug is placed in the atmosphere of a Vojvodina family from the beginning of the 19th century. It shows a hug of two brothers, but leaves an open field to load emotions, since this isolated detail can be associated with joy and/or sadness, and is just a segment of the Family Portraits mosaic. The viewers easily become part of the narration in which they participate through emotional activity and deep introspection.

Matija Debeljuh, on the other hand, builds A Study for Scaffold through a series of visual notes made during the preparations for the film, for which Mirko Kovač’s novel under the same title was a flexible literary template. The film’s narrative becomes a meeting place where the past, present and future condense through the characters of an old man, an adult man and a boy, who, actually, represent a place of reflection about the flow of time, changes, nostalgia and memory, all in different interior spaces, symbolically representing a moment or period in the life of the protagonists.

The parts of the spatial installation are linked with elements of construction scaffolding that, as a physical and symbolic structure, defines the space and emphasizes the structure of the entire work setting. The attention is directed to the atmosphere and the experience of the work itself, to the ways of presentation and reception, as well as to the complex relationships of the contemporary subject in the mediatized space and time.
